Jakarta, 30 June 2020. Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission detains three suspects in a bribery case related to the 2017 and 2018 Provincial Budget Drafts of Jambi Province. The three suspects were C (a member of Restorari Nurani or Conscience Restoration Faction), TH (a member of PKB Faction), and PN (a member of PPP Faction).

For investigation purpose, KPK will detain the three suspects at KPK’s Pomdam Jaya Guntur Detention Center for the first 20 days from 30 June 2020 to 19 July 2020. Before being admitted to the detention center, they must first perform self-isolation for 14 days at KPK’s C1 Detention Center as a precaution against COVID-19.

The three, who start their detention term today, have been identified as suspects since 28 December 2018 with 10 other people. Seven out of the 10 have been found guilty under court decisions with permanent legal force.

The three suspects are alleged to have violated Article 12 letter a or Article 11 of Law Number 31 of 1999 on the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001 in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) and Article 65 paragraph (1) of the Indonesian Criminal Code.

Political graft constitutes one type of cases most frequently handled by KPK. Up to this day, such cases have implicated 184 members of Regional Representative Councils in 22 regions. This represents a negative side of the democracy in the country. The trust that people give to their representatives at both regional and state levels should not be abused for personal gains.
