Australian Ambassador Gary Quinlan and his entourage visited KPK’s Red and White Building this afternoon (18/2) to exchange information and find out about the stories behind the Corruption Eradication Commission’s success in eradicating corruption in Indonesia.

Quinlan was welcomed by KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo, KPK Deputy Chairs Basaria Pandjaitan and Laode Muhammad Syarif.

“We learn from the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2018. KPK still has a long way to go. We just scored 38 at the CPI, ranked fourth in ASEAN after Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia. We have to work harder to become an even better institution,” Agus said.

Laode said beside centering its work on enforcement in corruption eradication, KPK also focuses on corruption prevention, such as in mining, forestry, fisheries, plantation and licensing sectors.

“We have done collaboration and the result is ministerial decree on mining inspection. In terms of enforcement, we have arrested several regents, governors, and many other officials,” Laode said.

Gary said Indonesia is currently on the pinnacle of economic growth, legal enforcement programs, and financial intelligence. He wanted to find out more about what KPK had done and would do as the most trusted public corruption eradication institution.

“We come here to see what we can learn from KPK. We admire this commission and the works that you’ve done. We want to learn how KPK guard all this,” Quinlan said.

The Australian Embassy and KPK has worked together several times in the past few years. The same support has been extended to NGOs, civil society and others. Today’s meeting will continue in the next several weeks, and Australia’s Head of Public Service is scheduled to visit Indonesia. They wish to learn about corruption eradication efforts from KPK.
