Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) held a webinar entitled “Understanding Oligarchy, Constitutional, Economic, and Political Aspects of Corruption Eradication” to officially mark the opening of Anticorruption Journalism Academy (ALJK) this year.

Hosted by Febri Diansyah, Head of KPK Public Relations Bureau, this online discussion featured four presenters: (1) Jeffrey Winters, Chair of the Department of Political Science, North Western University; (2) Najwa Shihab, a journalist and founder of Narasi TV; (3) Zainal Arifin Mochtar, a Constitutional Law expert from UGM; and (4) Faisal Basri, an economist.

During the opening of this event (9/6), Alexander Marwata, KPK Deputy Commissioner, explained that AJLK 2020 was organized as an effort to encourage the general public to work together with KPK to combat corruption. This program provides the public with an opportunity to understand various aspects of corruption eradication.

“The public needs to be supplied with basic knowledge of the causes of corruption, impacts of corruption, and ways to monitor it together,” he said.

According to Alex, the people must be encouraged to be able to view the causes and impacts of corruption from various points of view, such as politics, law, and economics. They also need to know the importance of identifying reliable journalistic products as sources of information.

Furthermore, Febri explained that AJLK 2020 is a five-day intensive class which will offer materials needed for disseminating information related to corruption eradication. AJLK was initially planned to begin with a series of training in 15 cities in Indonesia. However, due to the still lingering COVID-19 pandemic, the concept was changed into a webinar.

“This program is not only open for journalists, but also for the general public throughout Indonesia who are concerned with the issue of corruption eradication and willing to disseminate the information about it. Citizen journalists, community journalists, and even scholars are invited to join and register,” he said.

Anticorruption Journalism Academy is open to people from various social backgrounds. Registration will be opened on KPK’s official website, and KPK will select 30 eligible participants to attend a five-day intensive course in Jakarta. Participants will be asked to do a final project, which can be in the forms of news reports, publication websites, or any other products aimed to disseminate information on corruption eradication efforts.

The best work will be announced during the graduation ceremony of Anticorruption Journalism Academy, which will be held in conjunction with the International Anticorruption Day on 9 December 2020 in Jakarta.
