Deputy Chair of the Corruption Eradication Commission Laode Muhammad Syarief gave recommendations on the government and the House of Representative’s plan to amend Law on Corruption Crime. He presented the recommendations in a paper called “The Need to Amend Law on Corruption Crime”, which he said would make corruption eradication efforts in Indonesia more effective.

“The government should input UNCAC articles in the amendment, including the article on corruption eradication authority related to private sector,” he said when speaking at the national seminar and call-for-paper event of the Indonesian Society of Criminal Law and Criminology at the University of Indonesia’s Law Faculty, Depok, West Java (18/2).

“In the cases handled by KPK, many people from private sectors are proven to bribe state officials. Therefore, it needs to be stipulated in the law amendment,” he said.

Other articles that have to be adopted, he added, are those on trading influences, enriching oneself through illegal means, and bribery for foreign state officials and officials of international organizations. Laode said the entire society would benefit from the law amendment amid the goal to free the country from the shackle of corruption.

The national seminar was attended by academicians, the National Police Chief and the Attorney General. They discussed opportunities, challenges, regulation and law enforcement in eradicating corruption crime.
