Commemorating the World Anti-Corruption Day 2019, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) held a thematic discussion on Tuesday (Dec. 10)  at the Anti-Corruption Learning Center, South Jakarta, on the implementation of Indonesia’s global commitment at the national level.

KPK Deputy Chair Laode M. Syarif opened the discussion and chatted with participants, who are academicians and members of civil society organizations, such as Indonesia Judicial Monitoring Society (MaPPI FHUI), Jentera Law School, and Transparency International Indonesia (TII).

Syarif reminded the participants on the ratification of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) that is stipulated in Law No. 7/2006. The ratification obliges Indonesia to implement UNCAC’s regulation, including the implementation of two-round peer review mechanism on the articles of UNCAC.

“Indonesia has completed the two rounds, which resulted in 53 recommendations, including having independent anticorruption body,” Syarif said.

Article 6 Point 2 of UNCAC emphasizes on strengthening anti-corruption institution, according to Jakarta Statement on the Principles for Anti-Corruption Agencies or Jakarta Principles.

The discussion involved many elements of society, which Syarif said plays crucial role in eradicating corruption. Especially since Law No. 19/2019 on the amendment of Law No. 30/2002 on KPK curbed the Commission’s authority.

Another equally important recommendation, Syarif said, is related to Article 12 of UNCAC that emphasizes on increased of prevention effort in private sector by dragging briber or even corporation to court, increased transparency of beneficial ownership, setting  appropriate timeline for public officials to work at private sector, and thegbjct developmentj of anti-ccorruption guideline for private sector according to internationalcv standards.
